While looking back can be a unique experience for everyone, most of us share a common thread in our journeys: we had mentors. When I reflect on the key individuals, coaches, and leaders who invested in my growth, I am reminded of a promise I made to myself, to pass that same legacy on to the people I serve every single day.
Through my own personal and professional journey, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of knowledge-sharing. Granted, not everyone is in a season of life where they are ready or open to receiving this kind of guidance, and as leaders, it is important to recognize that early on. However, every day brings a fresh opportunity to seek out those who are hungry to grow. They are out there. Some might be a bit reserved, others are patiently waiting. One of our greatest responsibilities is simply paying attention, because those eager minds might already be standing right beside you.
But why should we invest our limited time and energy into mentoring someone? What do we actually gain?
The answers are large at scale. It is rare that anyone will openly criticize you for keeping your expertise to yourself, but the silent cost of hoarding knowledge is stagnant teams. You are the only person who can decide how much energy to pour into the next generation of leaders, the very people who may step into your shoes one day.
When you choose to invest that energy, the outcomes are incredibly rewarding:
By teaching others, you confidently delegate responsibilities, allowing team members to stretch their capabilities.
You actively facilitate a proactive environment where continuous learning becomes the cultural norm.
You build a resilient team capable of stepping up seamlessly when you are out of the office.
There is no better way to truly master your own craft than by breaking it down and instructing others.
As I look ahead, I can no longer imagine a day where I don’t offer someone an opportunity to grow. Mentorship has transitioned from a leadership task to the single most satisfying part of my career. No matter the title, no matter the industry, mentorship always succeeds. You actively facilitate a proactive environment where continuous learning becomes the cultural norm.
You build a resilient team capable of stepping up seamlessly when you are out of the office.
There is no better way to truly master your own craft than by breaking it down and instructing others.
